What Is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a type of nutrient called a carotenoid. Carotenoids are pigments that are fat-soluble (meaning they’re dissolved by fats, not by liquids) and that give the color to fruits like ripe tomatoes and leaves in the fall.

Specifically, astaxanthin is found in algae. Have you ever had a bird feeder dry up, and then notice it had a reddish-orange coating while it was dry? If so, that was due to algae containing astaxanthin.

The astaxanthin-rich algae is a food source for marine life like salmon, shrimp, crawfish, etc. Eating lots of it is why each of these have a distinctive, orange-pink color. It’s the same reason flamingos are pink, too – they eat lots of algae.

What Antarctic Krill Eat

Krill are one of the smallest creatures in the Southern Ocean, and they live almost exclusively on a diet of phytoplankton and microalgae – which is a rich source of astaxanthin. It’s why they, too, have the same orange-pink color as salmon and shrimp.

It’s said that a single krill can clear the algae from a full square foot of ice in under ten minutes.

Astaxanthin In Krill Oil

Since Krill Oil was discovered, people have been excited about its astaxanthin content. While the exact amounts of astaxanthin can vary depending on the extraction method used, every krill oil supplement will contain some amount of astaxanthin. 

What Astaxanthin Can Do

It’s a powerful antioxidant. Astaxanthin has been repeatedly shown to have the highest antioxidant capacity of the carotenoid class. In these tests it was shown to be as much as 550 times more powerful than vitamin E and as much as 3X more powerful than lutein – just a couple of the nutrients to have gotten lots of press in recent years. In general, researchers estimate astaxanthin to have about 10X the antioxidant power of other carotenoids.

It’s anti-inflammatory. Astaxanthin has been shown to provide direct anti-inflammatory benefits. It also inhibits COX-2 expression and protect against DNA damage.

It also helps keep krill oil fresher longer.
